Best Way To Learn Advanced Php?

Author: I am a programmer. I recently finished school and started working as a web developer. I had to learn some PHP and I know the basics of PHP, and maybe even some intermediary skills. The thing that bugs me is that I don’t start php applications from scratch. I am currently implementing content managed websites with Joomla, and I know how to edit most of php code of Joomla in order to suit my requirements.
My question is, I wish to learn PHP advanced and I wish to start something from scratch but it seems that when I try to implement some complex PHP application I fail. Do you have any suggestions about this?
Any which is easier? PHP or ASP.net? I think ASP.net is easier. I coded a website with ASP.net but without a CMS and I found it relatively easier. And please note that I created this website in school. Now I’m working and PHP is still bugging me a bit, but I really wanna learn it inside out. Anyway… any suggestions?

I’m at you point also. For my opinion i’d advice php is good server side programming language for any project you want to do. To learn it i would recommend tutorials and ebooks and mostly after any subject finished try to give yourself an assignment and don’t stop till you finish it.
